EDINBURGH comes second to London on two accounts: in the most visited tourist destination stakes and on the largest financial centre in the UK front. It is home to two of the largest banks in Europe, RBS and HBOS. Over 100,000 people are employed in the financial sector alone. Edinburgh’s reputation as a world class financial centre of innovation and excellence is well justified and to demonstrate this the overdraft, the decimal point and the cheque book were all developed there.

London may come at the top of most rankings but it is in the quality of life stakes that Edinburgh comes first everytime. Not only is it one of the most beautiful cities in the world, it has everything you could ever want to get up in the morning for. It has history and all things ancient to a cosmopolitan cross-section of culture, home grown and international. It has a bustling commercial centre with all the big brands and cheeky boutiques plus you are never more than 30 minutes from beautiful mountains, tranquil lochs, unpopulated beaches, championship golf courses and even the airport.

During the summer you can drown in culture. There is the book festival, the jazz festival, the international arts festival, the film festival and perhaps the best known of all the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, renowned as the biggest festival in the world for its comedy, theatre, dance and musical events. Many of these festivals overlap, so you’ll need your comfy shoes. During this season Edinburgh is transformed – every pub, club, street corner and park becomes a venue to put on a show.

Pubs: they come in all shapes and sizes, cosy taverns, funky chains and late night dens. Restaurants: some of the finest in the world using the highest quality Scottish produce, checkout the seafood. Music and dance: live bands, jazz, salsa, drum ‘n’ bass, soul, house, trance, reggae, techno we’ve got the lot.

Then as the year draws to a close and everyone else is a bit tired Edinburgh hosts the biggest New Year party the world has ever seen – the Hogmany celebrations. Why on earth would you want to be anywhere else?
